Apple Pie Recipe

This recipe has been family tested for generations and continues to get rave reviews. It has the perfect combination of apples and spices enclosed between two superb, flaky crusts. Served at family gatherings, holidays, lodge and church functions, it is a sure hit every time.

Following a tried and true organizational method of chunking, this recipe eliminates the possibility of finding an ingredient missing from the cupboard after starting. All ingredients are assembled before starting and the recipe is chunked into easy to follow steps.

Total preparation time: Less then 45 minutes
Baking time: Approx. 60 minutes – Oven Temp 350 F (177 C)

Serves 6-8
1. Pie Crust:
Assemble the following ingredients:

  • 4 Oz (½ cp or 110g) Margarine
  • 2 OZ (¼ cp or 55g) Lard
  • (6 Oz Margarine – No Lard for vegetarian recipe)
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 8 Oz (1 cp or 225g) White Flour
  • 2 Tbs. Cold Water

Substitution:
Ready-made crust

2. Pie Filling:
Assemble the following ingredients:

  • 1 lb (500g) Apples (2-3 Granny Smith apples – the rest other apples for more interesting flavor)
  • 2 Tbs. Lemon Juice 1 Oz
  • 2 ½ Cp Sugar – plus another small amount for sprinkling on crust
  • 2 ½ Tbs. Cornstarch
  • ¼ Cp Flour
  • Dash of Cinnamon
  • Dash of Nutmeg
  • 1 Oz Salted Butter (set aside)

3. Pie Topping
Assemble the following ingredients:

  • 1 Oz (28g) Milk
  • Dash of Cinnamon
  • Dash of Sugar

Step #1: Pie Crust

A. Blend together Flour, Margarine, lard, and salt with fork or pastry blender until consistency of fine crumbs
B. Add Water to make a pliable dough and roll on floured surface to make 2 pie crusts, one slightly larger than the other, both larger than the pie pan
C. Put larger crust in pan – Reserve smaller crust for top

Step 2: Pie Filling
A. Peel and slice apples into less than to 1/4″ slices Do Not Cook
B. Add Lemon Juice and stir into apples at once (this prevents discoloration)
C. Add 1/2 Cp Sugar, stirring well
D. Drain off excess juice and place filling atop lower crust in pan
E. Mix remaining pie filling ingredients, except butter, in bowl and pour over filling
F. Place small dots of butter evenly over filling
G. Cover with larger crust and pinch bottom and top crusts together around edges to seal
H. Make slits or a decorative design of holes or slits on top crust to allow steam to escape during baking

Step #3: Pie Topping
Brush top crust with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar

Bake approx 60 minutes – 350 degree oven – Cool to serve

Delicious hot or cold. Served alone or with ice cream or custard.

Warning:

The filling will be very hot when removed from oven.
